Raising Hope and Fighting Back: Sally’s YMCA Honors Parkinson’s Awareness Month with Rock Steady Boxing Program
Denver, NC – April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the more than 10 million people worldwide living with this progressive neurological disease. At Sally’s YMCA, hope is alive and thriving through the Rock Steady Boxing program, where courage, determination, and community come together to fight back against Parkinson’s disease.
With 33 dedicated boxers and over 40 passionate volunteers, Rock Steady Boxing at Sally’s YMCA is more than just a fitness program—it’s a family. This innovative boxing program is designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s, using high-energy workouts to improve mobility, balance, strength, and confidence. Beyond the physical benefits, it fosters friendships, resilience, and an unbreakable spirit of support.
“My father-in-law passed away with Parkinson’s,” says Teresa Mulcahy, leader of Rock Steady Boxing at Sally’s YMCA, “I watched him go from mobile to not moving at all. Studies have shown that people with Parkinson’s engaging in high intensity workouts for 30 minutes three times a week, can help slow the progression of the disease. The Rock Steady Boxing program provides a space where each boxer can work at their own personal level.”

Our volunteers, many of whom have personal connections to Parkinson’s, are the heartbeat of this program. From helping with exercises to offering words of encouragement, they ensure that every class is a safe, welcoming, and uplifting space.
Cynthia, a boxer with Rock Steady, said, “I love this program. I’ve been participating since the beginning of this program in Denver. It keeps me going! Teresa is amazing and she understands when we have to modify our workouts if needed.”
“I don’t know what I would do without this program,” said Joan, with tears in her eyes. Joan (shown with the pink boxing gloves), who’s boxer name is Pumpkin Spice, has also been involved since the beginning of the Denver program. “Teresa is the best!”

Parkinson’s Awareness Month is a time to educate, advocate, and inspire. Sally’s YMCA invites the community to learn more, support our boxers, and spread awareness. Those interested in joining, volunteering, or donating can contact Sally’s YMCA at (828) 838-1920 or visit our website at www.ymcacv.org.
At Rock Steady Boxing, every jab, hook, and uppercut is a statement: Parkinson’s may be relentless, but so are we. The group is a family and you are welcome to join.
