Walking the Walk


Did you know the YMCA of Catawba Valley has a wellness program for our employees? We encourage our staff to be physically active and live healthy lifestyles just like we encourage our members.  Staff receives wellness points for physical activity, health education and programs, preventative care such as dental cleaning, mammograms and well-checks as well as giving back to the community through monetary donations or volunteering with a charity of choice. We set wellness goals for our full-time staff and they receive a quarterly bonus for being healthy and active.

For the month of August, we are holding our 4th quarterly Fitness challenge for the highest average distance per person for the team.  Look at our feet! See a black button? It’s a smart pedometer from FitKIK measuring every step we take. The 3 branches, Hickory Foundation, Shuford and Corporate/ Valley are competing as teams and moving more than we ever have.  The teambuilding and “junk talking” are an added bonus along with the physical challenge of moving more than your teammates and the other teams. A trophy is awarded to the winning team and the Hickory team has bested us for the last two challenges!

Doesn’t everyone like a challenge?  How are you measuring your daily activity and how can the Y help you reach your fitness goals? Here are a few suggestions:

Consider a pedometer or wearable activity-tracking device to really see if you’re reaching the daily minimal goals of 5000 steps a day. Most of us do not move as much as we think we are.  (My own personal goal is 10,000 steps a day.)

Use your smart phone to schedule or log your workouts.  All of us are busy, but healthy living should be a priority no matter what your fitness level is.

Try a new group exercise class to mix up your routine at the YMCA. A wide-range of classes are offered such as: TRX, Zumba, Insanity, Spin, PiYo, Yoga, Boot Camp, Barre… just to name a few.

Sign-up for the Coaching Connection Program which is part of your membership. You will work one-on-one with a trainer who can give you new workouts and exercises for six straight weeks! You will leave with a new workout in hand.

Are you ready to start moving now? We are halfway through our Y Staff August challenge and our Corporate team has logged over 570 miles so far! Here at the Y, we are all about encouraging and motivating both ourselves and our members to be healthier in Mind, Body and Spirit. Challenge yourself to MOVE MORE as the staff at the Y is doing now.
