When you look at a Y, I am sure many people think they are just looking at a gym. It has fitness equipment, wellness coaches, group exercise classes, and weights. In reality the Y is not a gym, but rather a collective group of people working towards a common cause. That cause is strengthening our community. We do that through focusing on 3 key areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Youth development is all about kids having the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. One program we do is childcare. With so many demands on today’s families and the increased focus on early brain development, families need all the support they can get to nurture the potential of youth. That’s why child care at the Y focuses on child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn fundamental skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance. The Y also offers programs for children as they age such as swimming and sports. These programs like the childcare nurture a child in a safe environment and help develop those skills.
Healthy living is about people making lifestyle changes to have a more active life and at the Y we look to do that from the inside out focusing on spirit, mind, and body. We know that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing mind, body and spirit, well-being and fitness at the Y is so much more than just working out. Beyond fitness facilities, we provide educational programs to promote healthier decisions, and offer a variety of programs that support physical, intellectual and spiritual strength.
Social responsibility is bringing the community together to make it better. Whether it is through service together or teaching the community to swim. The generosity of others is at the core of our existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.
The Y is much more than just a gym. It serves to the community a better place day in and day out. The goal is that every Y make their communities a better place to live. Through serving people in youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility we are able to strengthen our community.
