The YMCA of Catawba Valley has a goal to teach everyone in the community to swim. It is our goal that no one goes without access to swim lessons. Y swim lessons also teach more than just how to swim. They teach water safety so everyone can be safe in and around water whether they are in a canoe or boat or out on a dock or at an ocean front. It is important for people to realize that learning to swim is life skill. It is something people can do their entire lives. Many activities are not like that. They can only be done for a certain period of time.
Y swim lessons are offered for children ages 6 months all the way through adult swim lessons. Our parent and child lessons are designed to get children used to be in and around water and are for ages 6 month to 3 years old. The preschool lessons are designed for children 3 to 5 years of age. Youth lessons teach children from age 6 to 12. After that teen adult is designed to get teens and adults swimming. There is not one person who can not learn to swim. It just takes some more time to learn than others. The earlier a child gets into swim lessons the faster they will learn.
The key to learning to swim is to take multiple sessions of lessons. The more sessions and sessions that are back to back you take the quicker you will learn. If you are in one time per week lessons then stop in and practice between lessons. With each time in the pool it will get easier and easier. Before you know it you will be swimming. Lessons at the Y are offered year around and can be a great Christmas gift. This year give the gift of a life skill a child can use their whole life and not a toy that gets used then goes away.
