When you hear the term health education, what comes to mind? Is it all these health topics that floating out on the internet? For some it is health class from when they are in school. Health education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their health, by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes. The goal of health education is to get people to know more so they can make better choices.
One way the Y does that is through our coaching connection program. This 6 week program is designed to help everyone learn more about working out and being healthy. Once a week for 6 weeks a member meets with a wellness coach. The goal is for you the individual to gain as much knowledge about working out as possible. At the same time, the individual get in the routine of coming to the Y and workout.
Another way the Y uses health education is through our employee wellness program. Each staff has the opportunity to take part. If they choose they get an actiped which attaches to their shoe to help them track their steps. The goal being to take more steps each day. As part of that program, there is also lunch and learn opportunities. Those opportunities allow the staff to learn about a health topic. One topic recently covered was about sugar. It was real eye opener as to how much sugar is in things and just how bad it is for you.
At the Y, we want to educate our members and our staff on the importance of many health topics. The goal is that with more knowledge people will make better decisions. Each day everyone has choices to make and the more information people have the better the choices they make can be. Be sure to check with the front desk for upcoming health education opportunities.
