YMCA Youth Fitness

Objective

The purpose of this program is to educate all youth, ages 10 through 15 on the basic fundamentals of physical fitness.  Youth members at YMCA of Catawba Valley are allowed to use selected weight equipment after the completion of the Youth Fitness Material followed by a scheduled Training Orientation. The topics to be covered in the class include: the benefits of strength training, the components of physical fitness, the FITT principle, major muscle groups, etiquette and rules of the wellness center and group exercise classes.  It is important that participants are taught how to use equipment properly so that they can avoid injuries.  With proper instruction, youth members can be taught how to safely and effectively use equipment.

Why do we provide this program?

The YMCA strives to provide safe and creative programs so that youth can experience and enjoy all aspects of becoming physically fit.  Research shows that by getting started with strength training at a young age, children and adolescence will more likely develop good fitness habits as adults.

How do you make an appointment?

Please call Julie Shinsel at 324-2858 to make an orientation appointment.  The first appointment will take 35-45 minutes and will cover the orientation packet and cardio equipment.  The second appointment will take close to an hour and covers the lower-body, upper-body, and core muscle workouts.

Monday-Friday 3:30pm-5:00pm is teen time at the Genesis Room.  There will be a trainer in the room every day at that time to do orientations, answer questions, and monitor teens.  Parents do no have to stay with teens during these times.  In fact, we ask all adult members to leave during teen time.
